Dr Abayomi Ajayi Bags ENDO Hero Of The Year Award

Another feather has been added to the cap of Dr Abayomi Ajayi, the Nordica Fertility Center Boss after he bagged the ENDO Hero Award for the year 2022 by the World ENDO March & NEHZAT Foundation.

Dr Abayomi Ajayi who is the Foundation of the Endometriosis Support Group Nigeria, ESGN bagged the award on Saturday, March 27, 2021 during the 2021 World ENDO March virtual programme.

A statement released by the World ENDO March & NEHZAT Foundation revealed why Dr Abayomi Ajayi was selected for the 2022 Hero Awards; the statement reads in part:

“Thank you again for being such an incredible leader and inspiration in the global Endometriosis Community! To recognize all of your outstanding contributions to the community and cause, the Worldwide EndoMarch Board and Nezhat Family Foundation have chosen you to be the Endo Hero of the Year for 2022 (announcements are made ahead of time!). We would love to invite you to pre-record a video statement if you would like, which would be included as part of this year's virtual awards ceremony, taking place on Sunday, March 28th (time TBD).”

Talking about how he ventured into endometriosis campaign, Dr Abayomi Ajayi in a video revealed that as a trained obstetrician and gynecologist, I was fascinated by the discussions in the ’80s and ’90s where it was believed that black African women don’t have endometriosis. However, from the inception of my fertility practice in 2003 especially after the introduction of endoscopy in 2005, we encountered several patients with advanced stages of endometriosis. So as early as 2005, we established the Endometriosis Support Group Nigeria and we started our advocacy campaign, trying to raise the awareness among Nigerians.

ESGN has been a part of the World Endo annual march since its inception. In support of the annual world ENDO march, the ESGN had embarked on several Endometriosis advocacy campaigns in the cities of Lagos, Asaba and Abuja and got the support of some of the most adorable women who joined the walks and created highlights for the events. Some of them include Mrs Dolapo Osinbajo, wife of Nigeria’s vice president, Miss Nike Osinowo, MBGN 1991, etc.

The ESGN has championed the expansion of the knowledge of endometriosis among medical professionals in Nigeria through its physician’s roundtable, a knowledge-based platform where medical doctors are trained in the management of endometriosis.

Other contributions of the ESGN in Nigeria include its annual visit to secondary school where it helps to identify endometriosis among adolescents, essay competitions where secondary school girls are made to research and write specific topics related to endometriosis.
