IPOB: Nigerian Army Locks Up Veteran Nollywood Actor, Chiwetalu Agu Over Outfits

Veteran Nollywood actor, Chiwetalu Agu, arrested by the Nigerian Army on Thursday has been released.

This was made known by a video posted by Nollywood actor, Emeka Ike, on his Instagram page on Thursday.

According to the video, Agu was released via the intervention of the Actors Guild of Nigeria.

Some soldiers had arrested the actor around Upper Iweka Bridge in Onitsha for wearing an outfit with Biafra inscriptions.

Agu was reportedly on a charity mission to assist underprivileged persons when he was arrested by soldiers.

The Nigerian Army thereafter confirmed the arrest of the veteran Nollywood actor, saying he was arrested for promoting the cause of the secessionist group, Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) by wearing the Biafran regalia.

In a statement signed by Onyema Nwachukwu, the army’s spokesperson, Agu was picked up for questioning while he was allegedly asking South-Easterners to join IPOB “a proscribed group.”

According to the statement obtained by SaharaReporters, the army said Agu's action was a violation of the law considering the proscribed status of IPOB.
