How I Got My BIG Break In Music – Fast Rising Singer, PHUMZEE

She is popularly known as Phumzee Sings. But her real name is Oladayo Oluwafunmilayo she is a beautiful and talented live-band singer. She has a band that sings good music. Right now, this pretty and elegant lady is the musician celebrities are calling to perform at their events and parties. This is because she is good at what she does.

She sings well and she has good stagecraft. She also sings all genres of music, from Juju, to Highlife, to Hip-hop, to Fuji and many more. And she dances so well. She is also very, very humble and she is quick at kneeling down to greet her elders even whilst praise-singing them. This is the result of her good upbringing. And when she hails an elderly person by calling the person’s name, she immediately apologises for doing so. She is blessed with a sonorous voice and an attractive personality.

A few weeks ago, she had a bash in Lagos where DAMILARE SALAMI 08155134153 met and had a chat with her. She revealed so many things she wouldn’t naturally say to people. Below are excerpts, enjoy.

Congratulations to you pretty woman. You sing so well and appear so gorgeous too. To start with, who is Phumzee Sings?

Well, the name already says it all, Phumzee sings is a young lady that loves to sing and that’s what brought about the name. I love to sing and I thank God that it’s growing gradually and getting better by the day. That’s Phumzee Sings for you in a sentence.

How did music start for you?

Music started for me from the very beginning, even when I was in the womb (laughs). Well, it all started from my childhood when I was in the church. You know, I had this church background, I was in the junior choir and I was opportune to start leading the church at a very tender age.

What church was that?

Yaba Baptist Church, Sabo; so, that was how it all started. At one point I joined a band from a brother who was in the church as well, his name is Agba Oye Ayo Ajiboye. I started going out with him to shows and events, so that was my humble beginning for you.

How would you describe your own brand of music?

I sing all genres of music. I sing gospel, contemporary, fuji, and all trendy music.

Any albums yet?

Not really, but I have a few live recordings that have been cooked in the studio. I won’t call it an album because I believe that an album is a compilation of your own originally composed songs and not what others have done. I did Thanksgiving in 2016 and it was fine, very ok.

So, outside music, what else does Funmi do?

I do a whole lot of things, I am this event kind of person so I do a lot of event planning, anything event, decorations, I’m a hairstylist and a whole lot of other things.

What’s your event planning brand name?

Phumzee Plans Events

It’s your birthday so how do you feel celebrating another year?

I feel so good, I feel so blessed, looking at the journey from last year till now, I’m so grateful to God for the people I’ve been opportune to meet in the last year. I give glory to God and I feel so excited.

What was growing up like for you?

Growing up was hell really, everything wasn’t rosy but I thank God for where I am today. It is far better than where I used to be. Even though I am not where I expect to be, I believe that the God that has brought me this far will not leave me alone. He has always proven to be a father whenever I am down and I do not take that for granted. He has also blessed me with great people around me. I am grateful to God for all of them because, without them, you wouldn’t hear of Phumzee Sings.

Where did you grow up?

I was born in Oyo State precisely and was brought down to Lagos a week after I was born. Then we used to reside in Ondo Street in Ebutemetta and of course, everyone knows the hallmark of that environment. I don’t think I need to go into further details.

Between then and now, what has life taught you?

Life has taught me so many things, I have learnt to be content with what I have, to be focused and steadfast in my faith, I have learnt that challenges are actually meant to make you stronger and better at what you do. Life has taught me not to just resign to fate, it has taught me that the value you get from life is dependent on how much value you place on people. Life has taught me to grab opportunities because I may never have it again, it has taught me that a second chance is rare so I have to make best use of the first. Life has taught me a whole lot.

What should your fans be expecting from you?

Oh! They should expect more shows, travel and tours around the world; we are looking forward up to that. They should expect a brand new album coming out very soon, they should expect more from their favourite musician and I promise that I would not let them down a bit because they are the reason I am here and still standing.

Looking at your journey into the music industry, which would you say was your most memorable show and why?

The most memorable one happened last year. That was a show I looked down on, I just reluctantly went for it because it didn’t look promising in any way and boom! It became the biggest of all shows to my surprise and amazement. It’s been very, very long.

Let’s talk about your band, how long have you been running it?

Whoops! Really, I can’t remember because it has been a very long time.

How has the journey been with the band between then and now?

There has been a huge improvement, we work together in unity and correct ourselves in love. Musically, we are improving on a daily basis. We have grown from what used to be a local band to one that can compete on any stage and platform without any fear.

Finally, a word for your fans?

I want to say a very big thank you to all my fans out there. Thank you for your love and care, thank you for always routing for me, for believing in me, I love you all. Even those who meet me for the first time, the manner of love I receive from them is overwhelming. Thank you all.
