It’s four days to the much-anticipated APC Convention, but anxiety is heightened as the party is yet to screen aspirants.
Top echelons of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have yet to screen applicants for various National Working Committee (NWC) posts three days before the party’s national convention as of the time of reporting this story.
Some of the applicants who talked to the media yesterday voiced dissatisfaction with the situation, claiming that the reasons for the delay had not been explained to them.
The screening of aspirants was meant to be done last Saturday, followed by appeals on Sunday, according to the plan of operations and agenda for the Saturday elective national convention.
Our correspondent saw several applicants for various offices waiting to be screened at the Nicon Luxury Hotel in Abuja, where the screening was held on Saturday.
However, as of Monday, it was discovered that the screening had not taken place, and that the appeals committee, which had been scheduled to convene on Sunday, had been unable to meet in order to receive complaints from unhappy aspirants.
Yesterday, several party insiders told our correspondent that contenders for zonal offices were meant to be screened before the NWC.
“We are fatigued,” said one of the South’s aspirants, who spoke to our correspondent on the condition of anonymity. The worst part is that the party refuses to communicate with us. “We have no idea what’s going on.”
“Impunity still rules in APC,” another contestant from the north claimed. I sincerely hope they can resolve their disagreements and enable the conference to proceed.”
Governor Bello Masari of Katsina State chairs the screening committee. However, the committee’s secretary, Emmanuel Chukwuemeka Otagburuagu, announced last night that the exercise will begin today.
Meanwhile, the party’s stakeholders have thrown their support behind the candidates for national leadership.
Senator Abdullahi Adamu, a former governor of Nasarawa State, has been approved by the Progressive Youth Movement as the party’s next national chairman.
Chairperson of the group, Princess Zahrah Mustapha Audu, in a statement, said Adamu would salvage the party in its trying times and bring back sanity into its activities ahead of the 2023 general elections.
Similarly, the National Coalition of Buhari Support Organisations (BSO) has thrown its weight behind the aspiration of a former National Deputy Chairman of the Congress for Progressive Change, Saliu Mustapha, for the APC national chairmanship.
