Gospel Musician, PSALMOS Reflects On Her Music & Life

Her song Kos’oba Bi Re, featuring Lady Evangelist Tope Alabi in Live Concert, has been viewed 3.3 million times on Youtube as of the time of writing. But, Psalmos remains ever humble and down-to-earth. She remains accessible and willing to share her success story.

Mobolaji Yemisi Adekunle-Oniyo, (born October 31, 1981) is popularly known as Psalmos. She is a gospel singer, Praise and Worship Leader and a songwriter who rose to prominence following the release of her hit song “Oluwa ku’se” featuring Kore. Since then, Psalmos has ministered in a number of churches across Nigeria and the UK, including Gloryhouse church in London.

Born in Ekiti State, Nigeria, Psalmos is the last born of 6 children. She attended Community High School, Ojodu-Abiodun, Berger, Lagos State and proceeded to the University of Ado Ekiti, where she obtained a diploma in Banking and Finance. She then went ahead to study Industrial Relations and Personnel Management and graduated with a B.Sc from the Lagos State University.

After school, she worked for 3 years as a banker at Reliance Bank Ltd, one of the banks that formed Skye Bank Plc (now Polaris Bank).

Psalmos also worked in an aluminium company and Avion Travels. She became a music minister after she joined the choir in Christ Livingspring Apostolic Ministry (CLAM) in 2004.

How has the journey been since 2004?

How did you get into the music industry?

God’s Grace, Mercy and Favor brought me into gospel music ministry, after I rededicated my life to God.

Why did you choose Psalmos as your stage name?

I came across the name Psalmos which means (Instrument Of Worship) during my study. I found it in the Bible’s dictionary “Concordance” after I lost my precious Mother in 2004.

The meaning caught my attention so when the ministry started, the Holy Spirit reminded me and gave me permission to use it.

What challenges do you face in your music career?

God has been faithful to me. All I just seek and desire is to devote and have more time of fellowship with God. So with this, I can say that my challenges are balancing daily activities with my time of fellowship and reaching a larger audience with the message God has given to me through music.

How many albums have you released?

We have released four Albums by God’s grace.

How did you get your big break as a recording artiste?

The journey all the way has been from glory to glory. I can’t start counting.

From getting massive airplay when it all started in 2004 till this present day of being blessed and graced with the ministry of our beloved and esteemed mother in the music ministry, Evangelist Mummy Tope Alabi. For all this, I say a big thank you to God Almighty.

That song you did with Tope Alabi (Kos’Oba Bire) was what made me know you. How did that song come about?

The song (Kos’Oba Bire) was birthed by the Holy Spirit through my hubby. He just came out of the toilet that fateful day and said “baby, God has given you a new song and message for this time and season,” and that was it.

How did it feel waiting for 5 years after marriage before having your first child?

Hmmmmm, I waited for 7 years.

And it wasn’t easy. But God showed up and glorified Himself in our lives and home after I told him I will love and serve him whether He gives me children or not.

How do you juggle motherhood, being a wife, and music?

It’s been a bit hectic, but we are good and grateful.

Can you tell us a bit about your husband and music producer?

My husband is a supportive and understanding man. He is also an amazing and anointed music producer. And of course my voice trainer.

What inspires your music compositions?

The Holy Spirit inspires my composition through different means like The Word (Bible), Situations, Nature, life, people, etc.

Why do you put a bit of your mother tongue in your compositions?

(Smiles) Guess I would say I write and sing it the way it comes to me.

What has being a celebrity stopped you from doing?

Not much I would say. But I don’t like not being able to eat my boli (roasted plantain) and agbado sisun (roasted corn) in public.

When you were a banker, did you ever think of singing as your number one hustle?

It was never considered, but I was always singing even while at work. One day,  my boss called me and said to me that “ Do you know that you are a vessel" for The Master’s (God’s) use?

What other thing, apart from music, do you do to keep body and soul together?

Nothing for now.

Should your fans expect more collaborations or what are your future plans?
