Dr Abayomi Ajayi is a seasoned and top fertility expert in Nigeria known for his unrelenting desire to ensure that the problem of infertility among couples is defeated. Many expectant couples who have sought intervention through his Nordica Fertility Centre in Lagos would testify to the deep experience he has on the field. 

Dr Ajayi has never rested on his oars as he always embarks on a series of groundbreaking research so as to find new ways of tackling infertility which is fast becoming a major health concern in the country. Just as he does his research, he also takes time to create awareness of any breakthrough noticed. 

A few days ago, Dr Ajayi organised an online media chat where he took the time to respond to various questions concerning infertility. The chat was aimed at creating awareness among the public on how best to tackle infertility in 2023. 

Meanwhile, he revealed the new approaches they are bringing on board to achieve successful In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) and by extension bring smiles to the faces of expectant couples. Below is what he said:

“ There is something coming up now. People are getting more interested in it. Not that they are completely new but there are new ways of doing things. You know we have been taking samples from embryos to test for some diseases before we do transfer and now we call it PGTA which is pre-implantation genetic testing for aneuploidies.

 “There is a new thing which we would probably want to start pretty soon. Now it is possible to look at the medium in which we use to culture the embryo and be able to tell what kind of embryo lay in dark culture. That’s a new thing. So we don’t actually take the sample away from that embryo.

 “Then the other thing is that people are paying more attention to what we call DNA Fragmentation which has the maximum capability to fertilize the egg. And that’s still a big problem. A few years ago, people started doing what we said is the DNA fragmentation index of the sperm sample. What this means is that we know what the sperm is going to contribute to the egg is the DNA. If the DNA is of the sperm that is already denatured, then the likelihood that the embryo that would be formed would not be of good quality. There is more interest in this now. We have been doing that for about 5 years. We probably are the only ones who have ever published on this from this side of the world. I think we are going to look more at it from our point of view. Over 15, 000 patients were encrypted. So we have a lot of data on what the sperm sample was like 10 years before. I think it was in 2017 or 2018 we did that and we saw that the sperm count of the patients they are seeing seems to be reduced to about 3% per annum. We were able to do that. We are going to do more studies on that even from this environment this year. Those are the things I can say we would be looking at this year.”

“And also of course we have been threatening to do this since COVID is gone now. We would be able to store not just eggs but be able to store ovarian tissues so that if you want to preserve your eggs, you probably don’t even need to do IVF. You can just take part of the ovary at the store. So those are part of the things we would be looking at this year.
